Everything communicates, however, not all communication is effective. It is not easy to communicate if there are already beliefs, biases and sensitivities that generate prejudices that contaminate the message. We have been educated to distrust and fear the unknown, the other. It is an evolutionary vestige that had a reason as a form of survival, but today it becomes an impediment when it comes to generating trust, so that better communication occurs in that space.
According to the Edelman Trust Barometer 2022 (https://www.edelman.com/trust/2022-trust-barometer), it is the failure of leadership that has generated the increase in mistrust, where a vicious circle is generated, in which the media and governments feed division and misinformation, while civil society organizations and companies are pressured to take charge of social problems beyond their capacities.
In order to reduce distrust, and redistribute responsibilities, we must create spaces for effective and safe communication, where before seeking collaboration, we open ourselves to understanding the other from a space that allows, from the vulnerability that the entire planet has experienced in the recent years, a knowledge of the other, their concerns, their interests, their obligations and their dreams. With that in mind, a process that is not easy, then build effective collaborations that seek not only to meet, but also to really impact, from the collective.
The most important thing is that it is not about better or new leadership, but about something even more complex, a shared power, spaces where governments, private companies and social organizations can find a common agenda, where the results deliver value to each one in its language, in its way of existing, understanding the reason for being, and then looking for strategies to face problems and needs, which from now on, and due to their complexity, cannot be resolved by a single actor. It is no longer about choosing between one or the other, it is about understanding that they are all known actors and more.
